Gwyneth Ho Kwai-lan was born in Hong Kong in 1990. She interned at RTHK and went on to report for BBC Chinese, Taiwan’s The Reporter, House News and Stand News.

On the night of 21 July 2019, a mob attacked people indiscriminately at Yuen Long MTR station. Ho kept live-streaming while she was being beaten — as she came through the ticket gates, a man known online by the nickname “Watermelon Guy” (西瓜佬) struck her with a rattan cane. The footage, carried by Stand News, became the way many people in Hong Kong remember that night. As of July 2026, seven years on, that man has never been charged.

In June 2020 she left journalism to stand for the Legislative Council. She won the pro-democracy primary in New Territories East that July with 26,802 votes; on 30 July a returning officer ruled her nomination invalid.

On 6 January 2021 she was arrested, along with more than fifty others, over that primary. She was charged with conspiracy to commit subversion on 28 February, refused bail on 4 March, and has been in custody ever since. She was convicted on 30 May 2024 and sentenced on 19 November 2024 to seven years — she never pleaded guilty and offered no plea in mitigation.

In February 2026 the Court of Appeal dismissed her appeal against conviction. That August it granted her, and ten co-defendants, leave to take the case to the Court of Final Appeal. The hearing is set for 10 December 2026.

In her own words

Ho wrote as a reporter, wrote as a candidate, and has kept writing from inside. Some pieces survive in the Stand News archive; others she writes in prison and supporters post for her. This section will keep growing.

“How did 2019 change me? It is simple: I saw how brave Hong Kong people could be, and I wanted to try being a little braver myself.”

“Pleading not guilty was not for any cause or any person. It is what I ask of myself: however hemmed in, however impossible, I believe that if I am serious enough I can still find a gap to open.”

The message wall

One breath, one fate.

This line was printed on the leaflets handed out at the street stalls in 2020. She is inside the wall and we are outside it; this wall exists so that the line does not become empty.

This is a wall. Leave her a line.

A volunteer reads every message before it goes up, so yours will not appear straight away. Giving a name is optional — leave it blank and your message still goes on the wall.

We keep only the words you type and the name you choose to give. No IP address, no email, no tracking cookies. If you want your line taken down, just say so.

The wall is empty for now The first approved messages will appear here.

What you can do

“What I want most is that nobody feels guilty on my account… If it really has to be for someone, then be braver — for me.”

Write to her

A letter really does reach her. We are working out the arrangements with Amnesty International; the address and the guidance on what to write will appear here once confirmed.

Leave a line on the wall

No name needed, and a line or two is enough. A volunteer reads it, then it goes up.

Pass it on

She is past two thousand days in custody and the news has stopped saying her name. Send this link to anyone who still remembers her.
